A Brief History of Marriage

by John de Waal

In twelve short chapters, experienced educator John de Waal traces the history of marriage from the ancient world of Egypt, Greece and Rome down to the present day. Along the way, he interacts with the disciplines of literature, theology, philosophy, psychology, politics and sociology in clear and accessible prose.

Wide-ranging and varied in style, A Brief History of Marriage includes references to marriage customs, laws and policies through the ages, alongside extracts from love letters and quaint and homely tips given to husbands and wives in bygone days.

Attractively produced and well-illustrated, this online resource is suitable for use in PSHE, history or Religious Education classes. Each chapter concludes with several questions which will stimulate further thought and provide a basis for classroom discussion.

Respect Begins at Home

Why the government needs to show parents more respect

A revised and updated edition of our popular Respect Begins at Home leaflet, including quotes from David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband on the vital role of parents. However, it points out that although the leaders of all three major political parties are prepared to trumpet the importance of parents, they continue to pursue policies that undermine and marginalise them.

Along with the other titles in the Respect for Parents series, Respect Begins at Home is intended to raise public awareness of the various ways that parents are being undermined. We hope that it will both embolden parents to take more responsibility for their children, and impress upon parliamentarians and policy makers the need to show parents more respect.

Unhealthy Confusion

The impact of the Healthy Schools Programme on sexual health messages in our children’s education

Unhealthy Confusion reveals how the Healthy Schools Programme is being used as a vehicle to impose a liberal and permissive type of sex education on pupils in many parts of the country.

Responses to Family Education Trust’s survey of all 152 local authorities in England reveal considerable levels of inconsistency with regard to the manner in which the Healthy Schools criteria and guidance are being interpreted and applied in relation to the delivery of sexual health messages in schools.

Although most local authorities recognise that schools are entitled to decide for themselves which external agencies they invite to contribute to their sex and relationship education programme in theory, there are significant differences in the level of local authority prescription in practice, with some authorities are taking an overly prescriptive approach and insisting on policies and practices that are not required by law or by the Healthy Schools criteria.
