Why the government needs to show parents more respect

A revised and updated edition of our popular Respect Begins at Home leaflet, including quotes from David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband on the vital role of parents. However, it points out that although the leaders of all three major political parties are prepared to trumpet the importance of parents, they continue to pursue policies that undermine and marginalise them.

Along with the other titles in the Respect for Parents series, Respect Begins at Home is intended to raise public awareness of the various ways that parents are being undermined. We hope that it will both embolden parents to take more responsibility for their children, and impress upon parliamentarians and policy makers the need to show parents more respect.

The impact of the Healthy Schools Programme on sexual health messages in our children’s education

Unhealthy Confusion reveals how the Healthy Schools Programme is being used as a vehicle to impose a liberal and permissive type of sex education on pupils in many parts of the country.

Responses to Family Education Trust’s survey of all 152 local authorities in England reveal considerable levels of inconsistency with regard to the manner in which the Healthy Schools criteria and guidance are being interpreted and applied in relation to the delivery of sexual health messages in schools.

Although most local authorities recognise that schools are entitled to decide for themselves which external agencies they invite to contribute to their sex and relationship education programme in theory, there are significant differences in the level of local authority prescription in practice, with some authorities are taking an overly prescriptive approach and insisting on policies and practices that are not required by law or by the Healthy Schools criteria.

Sex education is an ideological battlefield on which a war is being waged for the hearts and minds of children. Behind the innocuous-sounding words used by the sex education lobby, there is a definite agenda at work to undermine the role of parents and to tear down traditional moral standards. The need for parents to be alert and vigilant has never been greater.
 
Too Much, Too Soon sets out to tell parents what they need to know about sex education. It explains the law, identifies the aims of the key players, considers the research evidence, and weighs up the case for making sex education compulsory for all pupils from the age of five. It argues that young people do not need to be presented with a menu of sexual options from which they can make ‘informed choices’. Rather, the whole issue needs to be approached with honesty, modesty and within a clear moral framework that shows a proper respect for parents and for marriage.
